The Basilica of Santo Spirito and the Brancacci Chapel

Your AGT guide will lead you on a discovery of two major landmarks in Florence’s Oltrarno district: the Basilica of Santo Spirito and the Brancacci Chapel. This guided tour was designed by us, the AGT guides, to offer a deeper understanding of the Oltrarno neighborhood—one of Florence’s true hidden treasures.

The Basilica of Santo Spirito is a splendid example of early Renaissance architecture, the work of the great 15th-century architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Your AGT guide will share the story of its foundation and construction, but above all will take you inside to discover artworks of great value, first and foremost Michelangelo’s wooden Crucifix, preserved in the Basilica’s sacristy.

The tour continues to the Cloister of the Dead, so named for the large number of tombstones that crowd its walls. Each arch is decorated with a lunette frescoed in the 18th century by various artists. This church is still one of the most venerated by Florentines—a place where the true authenticity of the neighborhood can truly be felt.

The tour continues with a walk through the narrow streets of the Oltrarno, leading to the next site to visit: the Brancacci Chapel.

We will find ourselves inside one of the most important places in the history of the Oltrarno and of Florence: the famous Brancacci Chapel, located within the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine. This chapel is a true gem of Renaissance painting. Thanks to your AGT guide, you will be able to admire and “read” the magnificent 15th-century frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino.

The guided tour of the Basilica of Santo Spirito and the Brancacci Chapel is an unmissable opportunity to appreciate the Oltrarno and gain a closer understanding of the early period of the Florentine Renaissance.
