A tour guide is someone who, as a profession, accompanies individuals or groups with the purpose of illustrating the historical, artistic, monumental, and scenic attractions, as well as the productive resources of a region, upon obtaining a license.
Licensed tour guides authorized by the Municipality of Florence are identifiable by the badge they wear in plain sight.
The Florence Tourist Guides Association (AGT) represents the tourist guides of Florence and its province within the AGT Tuscany Association, founded in 1986. AGT Florence is also a member of ANGT, the National Tourist Guides Association—the first national professional association of tourist guides—which is in turn affiliated with FEG, the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, and WFTGA, the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, the latter being an official partner of UNESCO.
Only Official Tourist Guides—those licensed to practice the profession in accordance with current legal regulations (completion of a training course and passing the exam, or, under previous regulations, passing the exam alone)—can be members of this association.
AGT wishes to emphasize the importance of being part of a professional association for the tourist guide profession.
Guides are freelance professionals who practice the profession primarily on a full-time basis or, less frequently, on an occasional basis.
All the more reason why being part of a professional association is essential—to gain visibility, engage in dialogue with local and national institutions, address and resolve issues related to the profession, and ultimately to have credibility as a professional category. And not least, to achieve professional growth.
AGT Florence regularly organizes in-depth lectures for its members, conducted by university professors or exhibition curators—an experience that has always been met with great success. Members are welcome to propose specific topics they would like to explore further to the Council.
Registrations take place at the beginning of the year, subject to approval by the Council.
The membership fee is annual and tax-deductible.
The membership fee may also include enrollment in the regional AGT and the national association (ANGT).
AGT Florence guides have access to a calendar on this same website, where they can enter their availability or search for available colleagues when a replacement is needed. The travel agency Italianroom, with which we collaborate, also uses the calendar to assign services.
