Museum of Palazzo Vecchio – First designed by Arnolfo di Cambio towards the end of the 13th century, the building has always been the headquarters of the city’s government. It has undergone restructuring over the centuries and the most radical changes were wrought around the mid 1500s, when it became the residence of grand-duke Cosimo and of his family. The halls and chambers, richly adorned by Giorgio Vasari and his followers depict scenes celebrating the magnificence of the Medici dynasty and of the city’s history. These themes are given maximum expression in the Apotheosis of Cosimo, painted on the ceiling of the Hall of the 500. The frescoes in the Chapel and apartments of Eleonora of Toledo, underlining the qualities and virtues of the young bride, are especially worthy of note.
