The palace – originally the headquarters of the Priors –  was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio towards the end of the 13th century and has always been the headquarters of Florentine political power. One of the rooms used during the republican period, is Niccolò Machiavelli’s Chancery office. When Florence was Capital of Italy, the Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy convened in the palace. One can visit the rooms inhabited by the Medici family in the 16th century and admire remarkable works by some of the greatest Florentine masters. The great Hall of the 500 with its ceiling and walls painted by Giorgio Vasari with the Apotheosis of Cosimo I is truly impressive and the exquisite painting in Grand-duke Francesco’s little studio as well as the rooms of the Duchess  Eleonora of Toledo are a succession of delights. The splendid sculptures by Donatello and Michelangelo are of great interest. One can also climb up to the Tower and access the archaeological excavations of the Roman Amphitheatre.
