Ancient Fiesole was founded by the Etruscans and boasts a vast archaeological area, which contains considerable remains. The 1st century B.C.Theatre, with additions from the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. , is still used in the summer. One enjoys spectacular views from its seats. One then comes to the Thermae, which included the Calidarium, with two swimming pools, the Tepidarium and the Frigidarium. It is thought that they continued to be used well after the 3rd century A.D., which was the last glorious period of Roman Fiesole. The Etrusco-Roman Temple was constructed in the 4th century B.C. The Roman building was erected above it, the ground plan of which was also rectangular, with a central cell, like the previous temple, but larger. The new edifice symbolised the end of the Etruscan town’s independence and the beginning of its Romanisation.
