Not many know that Florence can offer not only museums and churches, but lovely walks through historic, scented gardens. The most famous and fascinating are the Boboli Gardens and the Bardini gardens.
The Boboli Gardens are the largest historical gardens in Italy. They cover the whole hill rising behind Palazzo Pitti and stretching southwestwards towards Porta Romana. There is a formal, sixteenth century part, a wood and a baroque area, all of which you will be able to discover with your AGT guide, finding out how the gardens were used by the Medici family, whose private delight they were. The vegetation is trained into architectural shapes, surrounding statues, fountains, lakes and grottoes: a veritable imaginative triumph, designed by some of the most ingenious artists employed by the Medici grand-dukes. The unusual eighteenth century Kaffeehaus, with its Turkish tent-shaped roof affords lovely views and refreshment.
From the exit of the Boboli gardens near Fort Belvedere, your AGT guide will escort you a few steps downhill to the entrance of the Bardini Gardens, that enjoy a breathtaking view over the centre of Florence. Flowerbeds in bloom all the year round and trees enshrine the seventeenth century Villa Manadora, which is where the Pietro Annigoni and Roberto Capucci Collections are housed.
