Tour of the Basilica of Santo Spirito and of the Brancacci Chapel

The Itinerary is based on the two great sites of the Florentine South bank (Oltrarno): the Basilica of Santo Spirito and the Brancacci Chapel. The Basilica of Santo Spirito is a beautiful example of early Renaissance architecture by the great Brunelleschi and contains works of art of great value, the first of which is Michelangelo’s wooden Crucifix.

Inside the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, we find the Brancacci Chapel, a veritable jewel of renaissance painting, thanks to the fifteenth century frescoes by Masolino and Masaccio, whose works afford one a true insight into early Florentine renaissance painting.

Tour of Piazzale Michelangelo, San Miniato al Monte and the Porte Sante Cemetery

A pleasant stroll, leading us from Piazzale Michelangelo to the Basilica of San Miniato. Starting from the Piazzale Michelangelo – the most famous viewpoint in Florence, affording a magnificent overview of the city – we proceed uphill to the elegant Basilica of San Miniato, filled with works of art, like the floor and the thirteenth century marble panels of the pulpit and altar enclosure, as well as the renaissance chapels of the Crucifix and of the Cardinal of Portugal. The Basilica is surrounded by the Porte Sante Monumental Cemetery, created in the nineteenth century, which encloses the graves of many illustrious Florentine inhabitants.

The Oltrarno or South Bank Tour

The aim of this tour is to introduce the visitor to the discovery of the South Bank area of Florence, which is fascinating and full of tradition. One starts at the Ponte Vecchio, one of the city’s emblems, proceeding towards Palazzo Pitti, which was the Grand-ducal residence. On our way, we pass the Church of Santa Felicita and the famous Vasari Corridor, before we reach Palazzo Pitti. Our guided tour ends in Piazza Santo Spirito, a historical and fascinating area on the Florentine South Bank. During the tour, we will thus be discussing the history of Florence and of the Medici family, as well as the more authentic aspects of the typical crafts one encounters the workshops of in this special quarter.
