Visit of the Medici Quarter and the Medici Chapels<\/h2>\n\n

On this guided tour with your AGT guide<\/strong>, you will discover the great personalities of the Medici <\/strong>family, their lives and secrets, with a focus on the lively and colorful Medici quarter<\/strong>. The visit takes place between Palazzo Medici<\/strong> \u2014 the splendid residence of Cosimo the Elder<\/strong> and Lorenzo the Magnificent<\/strong>, where the young Michelangelo <\/strong>was also hosted \u2014 and the Basilica of San Lorenzo<\/strong>, designed by Brunelleschi<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

In this historic district, now enlivened by the San Lorenzo Market<\/strong>, the Medici carried out one of the most extraordinary urban renewal projects<\/strong> in the city. Here, Cosimo the Elder<\/strong> had the convent of San Marco<\/strong> built, which hosted Beato Angelico<\/strong> and Fra\u2019 Girolamo Savonarola<\/strong>. In the San Marco Garden<\/strong>, Lorenzo the Magnificent<\/strong> founded the first art academy in Europe<\/strong>, where Michelangelo Buonarroti<\/strong> began his career. <\/p>\n\n

The construction of the family palace<\/strong> and the reconstruction of the Basilica of San Lorenzo<\/strong> definitively transformed the ancient green area of Cafaggio <\/em>into the Medici quarter par excellence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Museum: Medici Chapels<\/h3>\n\n

Walking along the right side of the Basilica of San Lorenzo<\/strong>, you reach Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini<\/strong>, where the apse of the church faces. From here, you enter the National Museum of the Medici Chapels<\/strong>, the mausoleum of the Medici family<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The visit to the Chapels is divided into three distinct areas:<\/p>\n\n

  • The Crypt<\/strong>, located beneath street level, houses the burial slabs of the Grand Dukes<\/strong> and their closest family members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Chapel of the Princes<\/strong>, lavishly adorned with multicoloured semi-precious stones<\/strong>, houses the mausoleums of the Medici Grand Dukes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The New Sacristy<\/strong>, accessible via a staircase, houses the tombs of Lorenzo de\u2019 Medici, Duke of Urbino<\/strong>, Giuliano de\u2019 Medici, Duke of Nemours<\/strong>, Lorenzo the Magnificent<\/strong>, and his brother Giuliano<\/strong>.
